Being a new mom is a beautiful, life-altering experience. It’s also an incredibly challenging time filled with sleepless nights, diaper changes, and a constant stream of new responsibilities. Amidst all this, finding the time and energy to prepare nutritious meals can be a real struggle. That’s where your support as a friend or family member comes in.

One thoughtful gesture for new parents is to bring them homemade meals. Discover a variety of nutritious meals for new moms, including options that can be prepared in advance and stored in the freezer.

Things To Remember When Bringing Meals To A New Mama

Now, let’s dive into some essential tips and considerations when you’re planning to bring meals to a new mom. Your gesture of providing nourishing meals is not only about the food itself but also about showing care and support during this crucial time in her life. Here are some important things to keep in mind:

1. Dietary Preferences and Restrictions: Before preparing or ordering a meal, ask the new mom about any dietary preferences or restrictions she may have. This ensures that the meal you provide will be both enjoyable and safe for her to consume.

2. Nutritional Balance: Aim for balanced meals that incorporate proteins, vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates. These nutrients are essential for her postpartum recovery and energy levels.

3. Easy Reheating: Prepare meals that are easy to reheat or freeze for later. New moms often have unpredictable schedules, so having meals on hand that can be quickly warmed up is a huge help.

4. Packaging Matters: Use containers that are easy to store, resealable, and microwave-safe. Avoid dishes that require her to return Tupperware; disposable containers are a thoughtful touch.

5. Allergies and Sensitivities: Be mindful of common food allergies and sensitivities. When in doubt, stick to simple, allergen-free ingredients.

6. Comfort Food vs. Healthy Choices: While comfort food can provide emotional support, try to strike a balance between comforting options and healthier choices. This ensures she gets the nutrients she needs while enjoying some of her favorite treats.

7. Variety: Don’t be afraid to get creative and provide a variety of dishes. This prevents mealtime monotony and introduces new flavors and textures.

8. Fresh Fruits and Snacks: Include fresh fruits and healthy snacks that she can grab easily during the day. These items are perfect for quick energy boosts.

9. Dietary Restrictions: Be mindful of any dietary restrictions, especially if the new mom is breastfeeding. Some foods can affect milk supply or cause discomfort for the baby.

10. Offer Help Beyond Meals: While meals are a significant help, consider offering assistance with other tasks, such as grocery shopping, babysitting, or household chores.

For the Breastfeeding Mama

Breastfeeding is the ultimate power-up for new moms, unleashing a wave of benefits for both mom and baby. Breastfeeding not only strengthens the unbreakable bond between mother and child but also nourishes and builds a foundation for the little one’s flourishing growth and unstoppable development. To help support mom’s milk production, here are some things to keep in mind when taking them a meal:

1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential to maintain an adequate milk supply. Aim for at least eight glasses of water daily.

2. Eat a Balanced Diet: Breastfeeding moms need an extra 450-500 calories per day. Focus on consuming nutritious foods like whole grains, lean proteins, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

3. Include Lactogenic Foods: Certain foods can help increase milk production. Incorporate foods like oats, garlic, fenugreek, and fennel into your meals to boost milk supply.

4. Get Adequate Rest: Sufficient rest is vital for milk production. So when you drop off food, don’t stay long. Visit for a short period of time and consider heading home so they can get more rest.

Elderberry Syrup in a jar

Give this homemade Elderberry Syrup recipe a try. It’ll help keep your sweet family healthy all year long!

I began using elderberry syrup when my daughters were still in diapers. Elderberries are a treasure trove of health benefits.

Health Benefits of Elderberries

  • Boosting the immune system
  • Warding off bacterial infections
  • Shielding against viral infections
  • Shortening the discomfort of colds or the flu
  • Easing sinus infections
  • Acting as a natural diuretic and promoting regular bowel movements
  • Offering anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties
  • Alleviating allergy symptoms
  • Brimming with antioxidants
  • Packed with vitamin A for radiant skin

Elderberry is one incredible plant! I’ve made it a priority for our whole family to take elderberry syrup regularly, especially when cold and flu season hits. But here’s the catch – elderberry syrup is way too pricey!

I’d prefer to buy something off the shelf than add another task to my already bustling life. As a busy mom, adding another task can be overwhelming, and I want to avoid any potential mishaps.

However, when I stumble upon something I can whip up at home for a fraction of the cost, and it’s not too complicated, I make time for it.

This homemade elderberry syrup recipe is really easy and worth the effort for the money saved. A dear friend of mine first introduced the recipe she uses for homemade elderberry syrup to me in 2015 when we couldn’t kick the colds.

How to Make a Homemade Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Step 1: Combine Elderberries & Water

The first step will be to get yourself some dried elderberries, which I get on Amazon. up!

In a large pot or saucepan, combine 3/4 cups dried elderberries with 3 cups of water. Note the height of liquid in the pan.

Step 2: Add All the Goodies

Turn the stove on a medium-low heat, enough to simmer the mixture but not boil. Once the mixture has begun to heat up, stir in:

1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder OR 1 whole cinnamon stick

1 teaspoon of ground cloves or 4 whole cloves
1 tablespoon of fresh ginger or 1 teaspoon of dried ginger
Optional: 2-3 whole star anise

Step 3: Simmer Down

The whole process is easy and can be done while doing other household chores. You start by simmering some dried elderberries with water and spices for about 45 minutes. That’s when you can be doing other things. No need to hover over the pot here! As the berries soften and the water reduces, the elderberry juice becomes more concentrated.

During this time, stir on occasion. Using a large flat wood spoon, I like to press the elderberries against the side of the pot as I stir. This helps to squeeze out all the good juices we’re after!

Step 4: Squeeze & Strain

Once the liquid is reduced by half, you drain the liquid. I use a fine mesh strainer,, which makes it super easy. Allow the elderberry mixture to cool slightly before proceeding, but not totally. You don’t want to burn yourself here, but want to keep the liquid warm – to be able to dissolve the honey later.

To strain the elderberries, I set a fine-mesh stainless steel strainer lined with either a nut milk bag or cheesecloth and set on top of a glass mixing bowl. I like this organic cotton unbleached cheesecloth.

Next is the fun part! Carefully lift and close up the sides of the cheesecloth, forming a nice little sack of berries. Then squeeze the heck of out it! Yup, this will dye your hands purple for a day or two. Wear gloves if you want to avoid that! Compost the leftover berry pulp, or steep it in water to create a dilute elderberry tea.

Make sure the liquid is cooled, and then you can add your 1 cup raw honey. Raw honey sweetens the syrup so kids will take it easily, but also has its own medicinal benefits. Win-win!

Then, you store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator, which will last about two months. For adults, take 1 tablespoon daily, and for children, 1 teaspoon daily. If you or your children are experiencing sickness or feel something coming on, that dose should be repeated four times daily.

That’s it! Easy peasy! Let me know what you think. Do you like to add anything else to your homemade elderberry syrup?

Are you feeling drained and exhausted as a mom? You’re not alone! Many moms struggle with low energy levels due to the demands of motherhood; late night nursings, lack of quality rest through out the day, or poor eating because your running kids too and fro from different activities. But no need to fret, there are some simple hacks that can help boost your mom energy and get you back on track.

Though getting quality sleep is the obvious and often the # 1 solution to shaking that slump, it’s not always the most feasible choice. Caffeine is another noted way to boost your energy, but can cause headaches and jitters in those sensitive to it (like myself). While your body is able to adjust to caffeine intake, you’ll need higher and higher amounts of it as your body builds a tolerance. Thankfully though, there are other great ways to boost your energy that don’t involve caffeine or increasing sleep time!

Here are five easy tips to help you get more energy and feel better.

1. Try Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral that helps regulate energy production in the body. It can help reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and boost your overall energy levels. Magnesium also helps to regulate blood sugar levels, which can help prevent fatigue and low energy. Additionally, magnesium helps to relax muscles and nerves, which can help reduce tension and anxiety that can lead to fatigue.

Try taking a magnesium supplement or adding foods rich in magnesium, such as dark leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, to your diet.

2. Get outside and Get a Vitamin D Boost

Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem among many mamas, especially those who live in northern climates or who don’t get enough sun exposure. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for strong bones and teeth. It also plays an important role in regulating the immune system, reducing inflammation, and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. Unfortunately, a lack of vitamin D can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, depression, and other health issues.

Getting outside and soaking up some sunshine is one of the best ways to get your daily dose of vitamin D. Just 15 minutes of direct sunlight on your skin can provide you with enough vitamin D for the day. If you’re unable to get outside due to weather or time constraints, consider taking a supplement or eating foods that are rich in vitamin D such as fatty fish (salmon), egg yolks, fortified milk and orange juice, mushrooms, and fortified cereals. Making sure you’re getting enough vitamin D can help boost your energy levels and overall health!

3. Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking plenty of water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to boost your energy levels. Water helps to keep your body hydrated, which is essential for maintaining energy and preventing fatigue. Studies show that when you’re dehydrated, your body has to work harder to perform basic functions, which can lead to feelings of tiredness and sluggishness. Drinking enough water throughout the day can help keep your energy levels up and prevent fatigue. Additionally, drinking cold water can help give you an extra boost of energy as it causes your body to burn more calories in order to warm it up. Make sure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day for optimal health and energy!

4. Eat Energy-Boosting Healthy Snacks

Snacking on healthy foods can give you an energy boost when needed and nourish your body. Choose snacks that are high in protein and fiber such as nuts, yogurt, fruit, or whole grain crackers. These types of snacks will provide sustained energy without causing a crash later on

1. Nuts: Nuts are a great source of protein and healthy fats, which can help give you an energy boost. Try snacking on almonds, walnuts, cashews, or pistachios for a quick pick-me-up.

2. Yogurt: Yogurt is high in protein and calcium, which can help keep your energy levels up throughout the day. Choose plain yogurt with no added sugar and top it with fresh fruit or nuts for an extra boost of energy.

3. Fruit: Fruits are packed with natural sugars that can give you an instant energy boost when needed. Try snacking on apples, oranges, bananas, or berries for a quick burst of energy.

4. Whole Grain Crackers: Whole grain crackers are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates that can provide sustained energy without causing a crash later on. Look for crackers made with whole grains such as oats or quinoa for an extra nutritional boost!

5. Exercise

Exercise is one of the best ways to boost your energy levels and overall health. Regular physical activity can help increase oxygen flow to all the cells in your body, which will give you an energy boost. Exercise also helps to release endorphins that make you feel good and increases your metabolism, helping it to function better on a daily basis. Additionally, regular exercise can help improve your sleep quality, which can further help keep your energy levels up throughout the day. Whether it’s a brisk walk around the block or a full-on workout session at the gym, any type of physical activity can help give you an energy boost when needed. So get out there and start moving!

6. Don’t drink Alcohol

This suggestion of course depends on your current drinking habits.

Alcohol may seem like a good way to relax and unwind after a long day, but it can actually have the opposite effect. Alcohol is a depressant and can lead to fatigue and low energy levels.

Alcohol affects the brain in a variety of ways. It can impair judgment and decision-making, slow reaction time, and reduce coordination. It also affects the brain’s ability to produce serotonin, which is responsible for regulating mood.

Over time, excessive alcohol consumption can lead to long-term changes in the brain that can cause memory problems, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Additionally, alcohol can interfere with sleep patterns and disrupt hormones that regulate appetite and energy levels. So if you’re looking for an energy boost, it’s best to avoid alcohol altogether and opt in for sparkling water or herbal teas.

As a mom, you have memories to make with those precious kids. Try these simple hacks and boost you energy so you can be a more energetic and intention mom. Remember to get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, eat healthy snacks, exercise regularly, and avoid alcohol. With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to tackle the day with more energy and enthusiasm!
